Challengers eye quarter-final passage
Thursday 14 September 2006With the inauguration of their new 5,000-capacity Krasnoarmeysk stadium having witnessed one of the UEFA Women's Cup all-time great games on Tuesday, WFC Rossiyanka will be hoping for less drama and more points when they entertain Brøndby IF.
Five for Fleeting
The Russian champions scored four goals in their Group 4 game against Arsenal LFC, only to be undone by a sparkling five-goal show from the English club's Scottish international forward Julie Fleeting. There were also goals aplenty in the other match in the section, Denmark forward Cathrine Paaske Sørensen hitting three of them in a 5-1 triumph for Brøndby against 1. FC Femina Budapest. Sørensen said: "It was disappointing to concede a goal but we're confident going into our next two matches, especially the game against Arsenal after we beat them last season." Should both teams win on Thursday, their match on Sunday will decide who tops the pool.
Tough test
The winners would progress to a last-eight tie against the runners-up in Group 3, a section in which 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam are the team to beat. The German champions, and 2005 UEFA Women's Cup winners, needed a Conny Pohlers goal to see offf KFC Rapide Wezemaal and will perhaps have to improve the game as they take on mini-tournament hosts Saestum. The Dutch outfit were 3-1 winners against AC Sparta Praha in their opener.
Top spot
Top spot is up for grabs in Group 1 as the holders 1. FFC Frankfurt take on Breidablik, the sides having respectively defeated Universitet Vitebsk 5-0 and hosts HJK Helsinki 2-1 two days ago. The beaten teams meet looking to keep their campaign on track, with second place in the pool enough to earn a tie against the Group 4 runners-up. Two-time champions Umeå IK will be confident of recording the win they need to advance from Group 2 when they take on an RCD Espanyol team who lost their opener 4-2 to Kolbotn IL. The Norwegians face Legend-Chekseal Chernigov in their next match, when three points would also be enough to see them through if their Swedish neighbours avoid defeat.
